Series Of Earthquakes In China

In the past couple of weeks China has witnessed a number of earthquakes. The Qinghai province in the northwest on the Tibetan plateau and Yunnan province in southwestern China are areas prone to earthquakes.

The Yunnan province, witnessed an earthquake of magnitude 6.1, at 9:48 pm Friday (1348 GMT) near the city of Dali. It was followed by at least two aftershocks, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS)

Two people were confirmed dead and at least 22 others had been injured in the mountainous area.

 Then a few hours later, at 1804 GMT, more than 1,200 kilometres away, a 7.3-magnitude quake jolted China's sparsely populated Qinghai province in the northwest, followed by an aftershock.

Emergency personnel and disaster relief teams were sent to both sites, the agency reported.

In Yunnan, the provincial government said some buildings had collapsed, several railway lines had suspended their operation and more than 20000 people had been evacuated.

The quake was felt in all 12 counties and cities of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, with Yangbi being the worst hit

 Four earthquakes over 5.0-magnitude jolted Yangbi from 9 pm to 11 pm (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre. The region had recorded 166 aftershocks. Rescue forces had been dispatched to the quake zone, and rescue efforts are underway. 

China's Qinghai Province reported an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude on Saturday. Fortunately no casualties have been reported quoted Xinhua local authorities.

Highway sections and bridges have collapsed in the quake-hit area, making vehicles impassable. Well-equipped rescue forces have been dispatched to the quake zone.

The Maduo county in Qinghai reported a total of 104 aftershocks and 40 earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above. Due to the strong earthquakes in Qinghai one expressway and a river bridge collapsed. Some other roads were severely deformed and cracked. 

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake also occurred in Xuyong county of Sichuan Province early Saturday and a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred in Shangnan county, North China's Shaanxi Province on Saturday morning.
